Our Story

As of August 7, 2026, the City of Hancock and the Hancock Public Schools passed resolutions creating the Hancock Area District Library (HADL), which serves residents of the City and those within the School District boundaries (all of Quincy, Franklin and Hancock Townships.) The new Library Board has placed a millage request on the November 2026 ballot to fund the new District Library.

The Portage Lake District Library (PLDL) continues to staff the Hancock Library, including providing books and other materials, access to library databases, interlibrary loans, and programming. The Hancock Area District Library, however, is separate from the Portage Lake District Library, which requires a separate membership.

Library Memberships

Library cards are free for residents of the City of Hancock and Hancock, Franklin, and Quincy Townships.

Library memberships are available to individuals and households outside of the District Library boundaries for a fee:

  • Individual non-residents: $25/year
  • Family/Household non-residents: $40/year
